How to visualise supranational bodies the UK belongs to?

Illustration with the EULER diagram

The UK is part of thousands of international treaties or bodies, most known being the Commonwealth, the UN, the EU, the EEA and the Council of Europe.

If we limit our purpose to the continent and specific supranational bodies the UK and other continental countries belong to, the EULER diagram is a very good way to get the big picture of how all this is articulated and who belongs to what.

Now, the next step is how we use this visualisation method to represent in the most meaningful way not only legal treaties but also the hierarchy and interaction of their constitutive parts.

Let’s compare two EULER diagrams showing the same information and the difference in meaning resulting.

What conclusions can we draw from the above two same EULER diagrams?

First, choosing the right visualisation method is far to be everything yet.

Secondly, how we use its purpose will strongly influence the meaning/message people get.

On the first graph, we see who belongs to what treaty, on the second we better see various degrees of institutional integration in building an “ever closer union” within the EU.

Now, is leaving the EU also leaving the EEA?
